071027Doors4.jpg: 1500x1000, 409k (October 27, 2007, at 02:26 PM) October was a really productive month! At the start of the month there were just bare roof trusses as you can see below, but on the 7th we began sheathing the roofs, and on the 27th we finished shingling and installed all the windows and doors! Particular thanks go to members of First Baptist Church, who showed up en masse on the 27th.

Habitat for Humanity Seeks Experienced Carpenters

Adding a top plate to a SIPs wall

The Greater Fairfield Area Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers with carpentry skills to erect the walls of two houses in Fairfield on July 21 and 28.

Thanks to the work of dozens of volunteers in the past three weeks, the houses now have the subfloor completed and a few walls in place. The next two workdays will require a more experienced crew than usual. Volunteers under age 18, normally welcome at Habitat workdays, will not be permitted on these two days due to the nature of the work.

Individual volunteers do not need to RSVP, but may just arrive at the worksite (between Stone and Gear on north 9th Street) at 8:00 AM, prepared to work until 2:00 PM. Volunteers should bring hammers and nail aprons if possible, along with sun hats and gloves. Water and lunch will be provided. Groups of volunteers should RSVP to (641) 470-2711 to ensure that enough food will be provided.

The houses are being built from engineered components, notably structural insulated panels (SIPs), so this is an excellent opportunity for carpenters who are more familiar with traditional stick-frame wall construction to learn about the newer SIPs technology.

Garage Sale a Success!

At the city-wide garage sale on May 19, Greater Fairfield Area Habitat for Humanity made $1319.54. Our big money makers were the 3 large Andersen windows donated by Cedar View Construction. They brought $805. Also the front door with stained glass brought $110. We sold almost every thing we brought. Big thanks to Mary Backstrom, Sandy Ham, John Loin, Ben Stallings, Mary Backstrom, Don Wallace, Gary Dill and Kathy Brown, as well as everyone who bought merchandise!

Ground broken for two new Habitat for Humanity homes

Ground was broken for the seventh and eighth Greater Fairfield Area Chapter of Habitat for Humanity projects Saturday morning in the 900 block of North Ninth Street.

During the ceremony, both partner families, Sergio and Abbey Scharf and Eric and Clarissa Denny, turned the first spadesful of dirt.

The Denny children: 15-year-old Brandon, 11-year-old Sonya and 9-year-old Edwin; and the Scharf children: 10-year-old Kilee, 2-year-old Jaydin and 1-year-old Tavin also had the opportunity to turn over soil where their homes will be built, as did Habitat for Humanity board members.

During the ceremony, Clarissa Denny thanked Habitat representatives and others present for their help in the opportunity to become homeowners.

"We're happy to have the chance," she said.

"We really appreciate it," added her husband Eric Denny.

The Scharfs' appreciation was voiced by Abbey's mother, who said Habitat for Humanity is a blessing for the families.

"We're going to work together to make this a great success," she said.

The Scarf and Denny families each were selected by Fairfield Habitat officials to receive a three-bedroom, ranch-style house being built from the ground up.

The families will be putting in hundreds of hours of labor, or "sweat equity" working side-by-side with volunteers.

Plans are for concrete work to be completed this weekend, with construction to begin soon afterward. Fairfield Habitat board member Kathy Brown said plans are to build three Saturdays each month, with the fourth Saturday to be a rain date.

The chapter's most recently completed project was a three-bedroom home for Tom and Michelle Wallace and their children Stephanie and Lucas on the corner of Van Buren Avenue and South Sixth Street. Ground was broken in the spring of 2005 and the Wallaces moved in just a few days before the Greater Fairfield Area Habitat for Humanity hosted a dedication celebration April 1, 2006, to bless the family and their house.

When the Denny and Scarf homes are completed, 23 children will be living in Habitat for Humanity homes in Fairfield, pointed out the Rev. Mike Metz, a Greater Fairfield Area Chapter of Habitat for Humanity board member.
